An opening has arisen in Economics Research Management as Economist/Senior Economist for Sub-Sahara Africa, based in London.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct macroeconomic research on SSA region particularly on Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia.

  • Provide in-depth analysis on macro data; identify near-term and long-term themes in assessing economic and policy outlook

  • Write regular commentaries on major economic data, develop a framework to make logical economic forecasts

  • Self-motivated, thought-provoking research on thematic issues, including country-specific economic developments, monetary /fiscal /exchange rate policy framework and their transmission mechanism, key drivers and risk factors for economic/financial market outlook, as well as regional and global interactions

  • Respond to business requests from various internal and external clients; build up good client relationship to support the firm business.

  • Be accessible and proactive with clients and their needs; develop and maintain close relationships with the region’s economic policymakers

  • A reasonable number of business travels to support J.P. Morgan business, including J.P. Morgan events and meeting external clients or government officials.

  • Understand firm's approach and policies for managing risks in relevant business and applicable legal and regulatory rules, and policies


  • Applicant should preferably have a Masters in economics or finance and a strong background in macroeconomics (or a degree with extensive research experience)

  • Research expertise in financial sector issues, public finance, or monetary and exchange rate policies, etc. is highly valued

  • Demonstrable working experience at policy institutions, international financial institutions, or related industry working experience

  • Excellent writing (in English) and communication skills are essential

  • Ability to tailor high quality comments/communications to specific audiences (external clients, traders, salespeople)

  • Team work spirit

  • Willingness to a reasonable amount of travel

This role encompasses the performance of UK regulated activity. The successful candidate will therefore be subject to meeting UK regulatory requirements in the assessment of fitness, propriety, knowledge and competence (as assessed by the Firm) and (where appropriate) approval by the UK Financial Conduct Authority and/or the Prudential Regulation Authority to carry out such activities.
