The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co is responsible for the provision of legal services to the Corporation and is organized by practice groups that generally align with the Corporation’s lines of business and corporate staff areas.  This structure encourages legal teams and businesses and staff areas to discuss legal, regulatory and business developments effectively and in a timely manner.

Legal Third Party Oversight (TPO) is a division within the Office of the General Counsel that provides oversight of, and manages the relationships with, outside counsel engaged by JPMC.  The primary role of the Control Officer Associate is to ensure outside counsel is in compliance with TPO requirements. The candidate will be responsible for managing outside counsel through the 3 Phase Life-Cycle to include Onboarding, Steady State and Disengagement, and will work closely with the LOBs and other internal key stakeholders to resolve escalated issues pertaining to the oversight of the law firms.

  • Drive logistical aspects of onboarding outside counsel or expanding relationships with outside counsel
  • Provide dedicated support for consistent and accurate completion of all TPO templates and documentation required for the retention of outside counsel and other third party providers
  • Maintain and upload information to appropriate Legal TPO sites, databases and applications
  • Assist in the disengagement of outside counsel
  • Create or enhance department procedures/processes, and facilitate meetings necessary for achieving department objectives
  • Work closely with direct manager and extended team to strategize and spearhead overall program initiatives and support various operational issues related to TPO functions
  • Professionally manage confidential and sensitive matters while adhering to documentation and audit requirements
  • Assist with processes related to outside counsel communications and performance scorecards including mailbox management, scorecard distribution, tracking, reporting and database management
  • Cross train across the TPO team in order to readily participate in ongoing selective projects and perform other tasks related to the comprehensive law firm oversight program  

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 2 years vendor management or oversight/controls experience
  • Legal education or law firm/corporate legal experience preferred
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to effectively draft and share information related to legal, operational and corporate requirements
  • Strong analytical, reasoning, and pattern recognition skills with the ability to identify items that may require escalation and special handling
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects independently, follow tight deadlines, and prioritize work
  • Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to manage in a fast-paced environment that is impacted by not only internal policy changes, but also changes presented by regulators
  • High degree of flexibility and adaptability when dealing with fluctuating requirements and new processes
  • Highly proficient in the use of all Microsoft Office products
  • Must work comfortably and professionally with attorneys, senior management, across several lines of business, and various TPO teams
  • Proactively improve support services by building upon best practice and tools
  • Must be a self-motivator and be able to work with minimal direction
  • Practical and applied skills working with a Windows Operating system along with troubleshooting Windows based applications
  • Project management experience preferred
  • All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment.
