Group description


The Hong Kong-based APAC Office of Regulatory Affairs team is responsible for advising senior management and other internal stakeholders in relation to strategic regulatory matters impacting JPMC businesses in APAC. The team identifies, analyses, and assesses the impact of material regulatory developments in the region. It develops (in partnership with colleagues in the business and other expert functions) briefings, position papers, advocacy materials and guidance to assist the firm in contributing to the development of regulation and in preparing the firm for meeting the resulting regulatory requirements. This includes engaging in balanced advocacy with regulators and policymakers, understanding and providing thought leadership on how policies affect the firm, its clients and financial stability and economic growth overall, and governing internal coordination among regions and lines of business on global regulatory reform issues.


The Office of Regulatory Affairs is housed within the Office of Global Finance and Business Management.


Role description


The team is seeking an experienced regulatory policy professional, with a strong focus on Prudential and Asset & Wealth Management related issues. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the technical approach to specific regulatory change dossiers, emanating from the six Asian G-20 countries plus Hong Kong and Singapore, to identify material regulatory change, analyse potential impacts, liaise with businesses and other expert functions, coordinate positions and represent the firm's view with internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will also be in charge of the internal reporting for the team.


Core Responsibilities


  • The role would entail 3 main responsibilities:
    • Supporting the Senior Lead for APAC Prudential advocacy work in partnership with the Global Prudential Regulatory Affairs team.
    • Leading on priority advocacy issues for the Asset & Wealth Management (AWM) LOB in partnership with the Global AWM Regulatory Affairs team.
    • Owning the business management of the APAC Office of Regulatory Affairs team, which includes the organization of the firm’s senior management’s visits to the region (preparation of briefing memos, input into regional decks, agenda setting, etc.), the coordination of various policy forums, the tracking of policy updates and synchronisation of input from a variety of stakeholders into our monthly and semi-annual internal regulatory policy developments reports.
  • This entails:
    • Monitoring the international regulatory policy agenda (e.g. IOSCO, FSB, BCBS and emerging US/EMEA policies with cross-border impact) to ensure a holistic appreciation of policy goals between APAC and US/EMEA.
    • Identifying, analysing, and preparing internal reporting to our local, regional and global stakeholder on material legislative and regulatory changes in APAC countries and their application to and impact upon current JPMC businesses.
    • Developing partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders (line of business, compliance, legal, government affairs, and finance) to determine the firm's views on proposals/regulatory developments, and the appropriate response/advocacy mechanism.
    • Coordinating JPMC positions and communicating the firm’s views at meetings/committees/forums with internal and external stakeholders (including regional trade associations and regulators).
    • Drafting position papers, response documents, and other analytical pieces for a variety of audiences.
    • Delivering verbal briefings and analyses to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior management.
    • Playing a proactive role in forming opinions in a collegiate atmosphere with members of the industry, and reviewing industry associations’ submissions to regulators.
 Qualifications and Skills
  • 10 years experience in strategy/research/risk and/or financial analysis roles
  • Strong fluency in one or more Prudential regulation themes (Capital, Liquidity, TBTF, Recovery & Resolution) strongly desired
  • Sound working knowledge of financial services regulation in one or several APAC countries, and of their public policy context strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with asset / wealth management business a plus
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to maintain the team SharePoint are a must
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines, both autonomously and in a team environment (including cross-border), holding self accountable for deliverables
  • Strong time management skills with ability to manage multiple projects and time sensitive deliverables
  • Ability to effectively engage senior leaders around the region/firm
  • Excellent verbal/presentation and written communication skills
  • Flexible and proactive approach
  • Strong attention to detail while still possessing ability to think broadly about issues
