This position is a Senior Underwriter in Corporate Client Banking and Specialized Industries Credit’s Financial Institutions Group.  This group is responsible for the credit risk management of a portfolio of US-based banks, insurance, mortgage finance, and specialty finance companies.  These companies are active users of traditional commercial banking services and investment banking products.  


The main focus of this Senior Underwriter is the primary credit risk manager for a portfolio of Specialty Finance clients.  Specialty Finance is comprised primarily of commercial and consumer finance companies, as well as, market structure companies including exchanges, payment processors, asset managers, and private equity funds.  This Senior Underwriter role will also have the opportunity to cover clients in the other segments of the FIG portfolio including banks and insurance companies. 


The Senior Underwriter works in partnership with coverage banking, syndications, treasury services and other product partners to risk grade borrowers, analyze and approve credit requests, structure credit facilities, and negotiate credit agreements and other loan and trading documentation.  The Senior Underwriter is also responsible for on-going monitoring and risk management of an assigned portfolio of credit clients.


This is a national portfolio of clients, thus travel will be required from time to time.


Major Responsibilities

1. Risk Assessment

·         Identify the key risk factors associated with clients, transactions, and industry asset classes across an assigned portfolio
·         Develop and articulate a dynamic, forward-looking risk assessment of client companies, transactions, competitive threats, and industry and other factors
·         Lead and/or participate in client due diligence meetings
·         Attend client, bank, and other meetings to develop a better understanding of client companies, management teams, and industry sectors
·         Use financial models to incorporate the impact of forward-looking risk assessment on key value drivers
·         Develop and recommend appropriate credit structures relative to risk assessment


2. Credit Approval Process

·         Ensure all credit risk and other policies are followed, and credit exposures are approved at the appropriate level
·         Prepare credit approval materials, and present and recommend credits for approval at appropriate level
·         Analyze and negotiate covenants and other terms and conditions as part of a deal team
·         Review and negotiate legal documentation to ensure terms are appropriate and consistent with credit approval


3. Portfolio Management

·         Provide a well-researched and thoughtful risk assessment of each assigned client on an ongoing basis
·         Ensure risk ratings are accurate and reflect a current forward-looking view of the client
·         Provide early identification and proactive management of deteriorating credits and other problem situations
·         Analyze, prepare, and present for approval all required waivers, amendments, and extensions
·         Prepare and present semi-annual portfolio review material to senior management
·         Work with bank examiners and internal credit reviewers to validate credit quality and integrity of the credit process
·         Work closely with Credit Services to ensure accuracy of credit system data


    ·         BA/BS degree required, MBA/CFA a plus
    ·         Completion of a major corporate bank credit training program or equivalent experience
    ·         Minimum of 7 years of commercial / corporate banking / lending experience including extensive credit, structuring, and marketing experience
    ·         Superior credit, lending, negotiation, and loan documentation skills
    ·         Meaningful commercial credit transaction experience, ideally involving lending to specialty finance companies or other financial institutions - experience with asset-based structures is preferred.
    ·         Independently productive; able to operate at a highly effective level with minimal day-to-day managerial direction
    ·         Knowledge of credit and JPMC (or similar bank) policies and procedures
    ·         Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
    ·         Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with clients, bankers, product partners, and senior management
    ·         Experience in building strong relationships with internal and external clients, facilitating successful achievement of goals
    ·         Ability to travel on a periodic basis
    ·         Strong computing and financial modeling skills
    ·         Excel/MS Office knowledge
