Job Description:
The Taxonomist is responsible for developing controlled vocabularies and applying metadata in order to significantly improve the findability and search experience of JP Morgan external users and the internal community.
A person working in JP Morgan’s taxonomy function will design, create, edit, and/or maintain taxonomies, which are specific types of structured terms in a simple hierarchy or term sets used for organizing, indexing and retrieving content in the Asset Management business.
The role requires a solid understanding of metadata, subject classification, description cataloging, user experience, and knowledge organization. Although technical knowledge is not needed to develop taxonomies, it assists to have a strong understanding of technical environments, their use, tenants, integration and interactions.

The ideal candidate is analytical, and detail-oriented. He/She believes in user centered design, has organizational skills and a passion for performing research and synthesizing findings. You naturally find problems and delight in identifying their solutions.

The candidate collaborate with SMEs and content owners/originators/people responsible to develop and test controlled vocabularies with the aim of improving search results across a number of internal and external information avenues.
He/She will also:
  • Conduct a range of analyses (competitive/comparative, Google Analytics, internal data sources, user research) to inform taxonomy development process
  • Evaluate categorized content to identify gaps in coverage, misclassified content, redundant and/or ineffective categorization rules
  • Perform complex boolean queries to efficiently identify similar content and apply auto-categorization rules according to JP Morgan’s taxonomy structure and category definitions
  • Create and maintain mappings and crosswalks to fulfill business needs and facilitate data reuse
  • Suggest ways to improve and scale our products and internal tools.
  • Gather requirements for a universal repository for all data sources including data source lineage and event-level lineage
  • Define required data elements and vocabulary and collaborate on workflow development
  • Define change management and version control policies for the data dictionary
  • Focus areas will be building a canonical form data dictionary for data needs, automation of metadata and metadata-driven processes, end-to-end content management, rights management, and ad hoc areas as required. 
  • Work with stakeholders and data providers to identify and source data needs
  • Establish best practice guidelines incorporating above and related practice (e.g. file and folder, naming conventions, etc.) 
  • Act as a product owner for the JP Morgan Taxonomy standards council to establish and manage a baseline of a common understanding of data fields, schemas, processes, and general standards. 
Technical Qualifications
  • Experience in establishing information management best practices; architecting and designing the application of metadata standards, controlled vocabularies and data rules. 
  • Experience with implementing metadata management tools preferred
  • Experience with content management tools and technologies, especially in a production and post-production environment 
  • Knowledge of relevant media metadata file formats, structures and standards; data management standards, tools and technologies
  • Demonstrate knowledge of information management programs including data structure, data systems and tools, related software and data management policies and practices
  • High attention to detail, and accuracy, within a high-volume work environment.
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent work experience
  • Strong problem solving and conceptual thinking abilities
  • Strong background in research and analysis, including the ability to evaluate source authority
  • Ability to balance quick decision-making with attention to quality and accuracy
  • Familiarity with information recall concepts
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills
  • Detail-oriented, decisive, and self-motivated
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience developing, implementing, and/or maintaining controlled vocabularies (thesauri, taxonomies, ontologies) in a business environment
  • Strong data retrieval and boolean search skills
  • Experience analyzing large datasets.
