Infrastructure Engineer – Linux Configuration Management

Global Technology Infrastructure (GTI) is the technology infrastructure organization for the firm, delivering a wide range of products and services, and partnering with all lines of business to provide high quality service delivery, exceptional project execution and financially disciplined approaches and processes in the most cost effective manner. The objective of GTI is to balance business alignment and the centralized delivery of core products and services. GTI is designed to address the unique infrastructure needs of specific lines of business and the demand to leverage economies of scale across the firm.
The Core Foundation Services (CFS) team is responsible for providing end to end support for critical technologies that are used across the company. This includes Configuration and Orchestration, Identity Management, Name Services, Enterprise Monitoring Solutions, and automation tools used to manage these technologies.
The Configuration Management & Automation Services (CMAS) team is seeking a candidate that will focus on infrastructure engineering and evolve Linux/Unix based configuration management services and solutions.  The ideal candidate must be able to create full configuration management driven system life-cycle service applications, ensuring technology interoperability and flexible integration with other systems.  Proficiency in documentation is a must for existing and new proposed configuration management infrastructures. The ability to provide complex troubleshooting/support within all levels of organization. 
Responsibilities will include:
  • Analysis of the organization's business needs with the capability to translate client requirements for automation use cases into design and implementation plans.
  • Engineering and architectural development of robust Operating system, middleware and application configuration solutions across multiple teams.
  • Proactive review of environment to suggest/develop new configuration management policies.
  • Analyze new emerging technologies in the Configuration Management space and propose functionality of the new technology.
  • Keep up-to-date on business trends and the latest technology innovations to forecast solutions, and anticipate emerging business changes.
  • Lead and influence the development of standards and decisions regarding changes to systems/applications, and provide technical leadership and vision.
  • Collaborate with other technologists to assess current capabilities and bridge the gaps with legacy and future systems.
  • Knows when to escalate issues or seek assistance from senior management.
  • Documents medium-to-large scale projects and delivers presentations with minimal supervision.
  • Can provide feedback and strategic recommendations to management.
  • Affects change within sphere of influence and leads development of innovative improvements.


This position is anticipated to require the use of one or more High Security Access (HSA) systems.  Users of these systems are subject to enhanced screening which includes both criminal and credit background checks, and/or other enhanced screening at the time of accepting the position and on an annual basis thereafter.  The enhanced screening will need to be successfully completed prior to commencing employment or assignment.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of system engineering experience of Red Hat Linux operating systems in a large, mission critical global production environment (1000+ servers).
  • Minimum of 5+ years of engineering experience in Puppet and/or Ansible frameworks (not end user experience).
  • Experience implementing highly automated data driven configuration management and automation frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of Linux/Unix security systems.
  • Advanced scripting abilities with Shell, Perl, Python or Ruby.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment and must be able to multi-task and work with minimal guidance.
  • Solid understanding of system backup processes, system monitoring, performance tuning and disaster recovery.
  • Understanding of SAN/NAS technologies and configuration management the OS to support SAN/NAS.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle clustering and ASM and/or Sybase is a plus.
  • Experience in system engineering of Solaris or AIX operating systems is a plus.
  • Programming development skills with C, C++ are a plus.
