The J.P. Morgan Legal Department seeks a lawyer with a background in UCITS and alternative funds for the Private Bank Legal Group in EMEA.  The lawyer will be based in the London office in Knightsbridge and will support the ongoing management of a new Luxembourg UCITS platform as well as the launch of bespoke alternative and mutual funds for Private Bank clients. The successful candidate will be part of an international legal team and work with colleagues across Europe, the United States and Asia.   The candidate will be a team player, commercially aware and attuned to the needs of a global business, be able to take the initiative and have a collaborative approach to the provision of legal support. 
Key Responsibilities
  • Advise on all legal and regulatory aspects of governance, management and administration of the Private Bank’s UCITS fund platform, including regulatory approvals, product development, custodian and management company arrangements, fund board, adviser and sub-adviser matters.
  • Provide Legal support for the Private Bank’s mutual fund offering including negotiation of investment management and distribution agreements and advising on legal and regulatory developments.
  • Advise on the development of policies, procedures and controls for the funds business
  • Work closely with line of business and other control functions (Compliance, Supervision and Risk) as well as external service providers.
  •  Coordinate, instruct and support J.P. Morgan’s external legal advisers.
Qualifications, skills and experience
  • Qualified as a lawyer (preferably England and Wales or another European jurisdiction)
  • First class English language drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Familiarity with EU laws and the European regulatory regimes, particularly UCITS and AIFMD.   
  • An understanding of establishing and maintaining a UCITS fund platform, including regulatory approval process and fund governance arrangements.
  • A knowledge of the private wealth management industry and cross border licensing and marketing regimes applicable to private banking products and services would be an advantage.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with the business and fellow legal and support professionals.
  • Business aware, proactive, and able to provide practical advice and solutions to meet business needs.
  • Good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ideally, experience gained within a top law firm and/or in the legal department of a top tier financial institution (preferably a private client business).
